Since our group presentation topic is Flipped Classroom, I wanted to see who has actually used Flipped Classrooms before. The physics teacher at my school uses this style of teaching and many of the students I have spoken to love this approach. They view the topic of discussion the evening before they have class and then answer questions that go along with the presentaion. They said it is great because you can move at your own pace.

Michele,
ReplyDeleteI really liked the information you provided on the flipped classroom. One of my colleagues does this in a way. Students read the text the evening before, performing a close read of the text and answer purpose driven questions. Then the next day the class discusses the reading, takes notes, the teacher reinforces the concept with some sort of demonstration. Not all classes are like this, but a fair majority of them are. The students seem more engaged and excited about science.
Michele,
ReplyDeleteI have used certain doses of the flipped classroom concept but haven't yet been able to fully adopt the system. I would love to get my grammar points, definitions, and examples out of the way before hand so the students could just come in and practice using English. So far I have used it for exam reviews and for holiday instruction where we have missed classes. The students have enjoyed the small bits I have used and plan to implement more of the strategies in the future.

Ryan,
DeleteSounds like you have had a good experience with Flipped Classrooms so far. You will have to let us all know how it goes when you start to incorporate it more into your classes.

Hi Michele: I am looking forward to your contributions to the Flipped Classroom discussion conferences. I attended some foundational education courses at the community college as professional development and found that this was actually the concept being used in several of their Hybrid Online/Lecture classes. The lecture notes were made available online and then the classroom time on site was used for creating collaborative work products among the teacher/students that aligned with the online lecture.
ReplyDeleteGood luck!

Virginia,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments. I went into this class not knowing anything about Flipped Classrooms. Then, we were assigned that topic and I was amazed at how effective this type of teaching style is if it is used correctly. I know there is a lot of time put into it but I thik it would be worth it when it was all said and done. It also helps to have motivated students too. :)

Michele,
ReplyDeleteI only heard about flipped classrooms last semester. I have not had a chance to implement the flipped classroom as of yet but I am hoping to try it out in my geometry unit this spring. I want to set a good foundation for my current group of kids before testing something new on them. Hopefully I can continue with making geometry more of a flipped experience and then add additional units. Great post.
